Recording Voice without a Vocal Booth

When you can't get access to a vocal booth to record vocals, there are a few different solutions:

  1. get very close to the microphone and turn down the gain as well as playing with mic placement;
  2. use a shotgun mic to reject outside sounds;
  3. or make your own vocal booth!

getting very close to the microphone and other tips (not just for podcasters): https://castos.com/mic-techniques/

a realistic article about using a shotgun mic for voice recording: https://justaskjimvo.studio/shotgun-mics-for-voiceov/

making your own vocal booth; these solutions might give you ideas, even if you don't have as much space as the authors suggest; personally, i have used something very similar to the blanket solution, with several blankets hung on stands: https://www.iconcollective.edu/how-to-make-a-diy-vocal-booth-on-a-budget

here's a similar article, though they don't like the closet idea; they like the blanket idea: https://mastering.com/diy-vocal-booth/

i've never tried this version, but it looks interesting and cheap! https://www.instructables.com/Super-Simple-DIY-Desktop-Home-Recording-Studio-on-/

short video with a guy who DOES recommend the closet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4wJMDUuHSM

a guy who explains why NOT to record in a closet; he also likes the same blanket method i used!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCtOHzx-tUo

i like how this guy explains how to record without a vocal booth. he did do the blanket over the head, which some people laugh at, but he likes it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_BId5iJu1E
